Forget substitution, remember moderation

Category: Diet

On Sunday night, we decided to go out for a family dinner. The initial plan was to go to a movie and afterwards grab a bite, but since the movie was sold out, we took advantage of the summery weather and relax in an outdoor restaurant setting. Kids were behaving, food was ok, the sitting outside and watching the people passing by was priceless...it reminded me for a split second of my single days and sitting outside and reading a paper or book, something I took for granted and today I see as a luxury. After dinner, we decided to get ice cream from my favourite place L'Arte del Gelato, but my husband suggested trying one of the places in which I never step foot in- a chain "yogurt" store.

The place offered the fun of self serviced, and my kids loved the idea of pulling down the handle and seeing the soft serve "yogurt" going right into their cup. They were especially excited and overwhelmed with the selection of colors as they care less about the flavour, other than chocolate of course...every other flavour my kids named by color rather than fruit flavour, but in this case and in this place it didn't bother me, as quite frankly all the flavours had only fruit names but there was very little fruit in them.

After leaving this place that was full of people indulging themselves with huge servings of this so called yoghurt I realize that a majority of people go to places like this in search of healthier and less fatty alternatives to traditional full cream, full milk ice cream. But instead what they get is a fat free artificial product that is filled with sugar and artificial coloring and flavourings; the product promises a healthy fat free alternative to ice cream, and a quick fix for sugar cravings. The cheating is done to our bodies, when we fuel it with half products...this wasn't a yoghurt, it was water with sugar and coloring added with guarana gum to hold it all together. I would rather have a scoop of full cream gelato that is natural and gives my taste buds real satisfaction and skip the huge serving of junk. It is deceiving to many, but your body will respond better to natural products in moderation rather than artificially created desserts or snacks that you think you can eat in unlimited amounts because they are fat free...just don't forget that sugar when not burned turns to fat! Just read the label and see how much sugar is in fat free snacks. And think quality not quantity!
